Amman - “Upgrading Karamah Border Crossing Point: Improved Access to Economic Development and Enhanced Stability” is a European Union-funded project, under which Jordanian and Iraqi officials and representatives of the private sector in both countries met today during a roundtable discussion to discuss the latest developments, needs, opportunities and challenges as well as ways to overcome those challenges. 

The aim of the project is to contribute to the economic recovery and stability of Jordan and region while ensuring that the security risks are mitigated in cross border movements of goods and people. To achieve this, the project takes coordinated border management approach with the aim to maximize the operational and security related capacities at the Al-Karamah-Trebil Border Crossing Point (BCP) on the Jordanian side. The major component of the project is to upgrade the infrastructure and equipment as well as further building the capacity of the competent officers working up there. 

The goal of the meeting today is to draw the attention to the needs on the Iraqi side, the ongoing coordination and cooperation between Iraq and Jordan and the impact of the latest developments on trade and economy in both countries. 

Today’s meeting also highlights the strong partnership and positive potential for progress among all stakeholders, the EU as a donor, Jordan and Iraq governments and private sectors, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
