Jordan - A ceremony has been held in Jordan’s Irbid Governorate under the patronage of HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal recognizing the contribution of a counter-trafficking project funded by the Japanese Government and implemented by IOM and Jordan’s Counter-Trafficking Unit (CTU).

The ceremony, which took place at the Jamileh Bo Azza School in Irbid, also acknowledged the contribution of schools, local officials and Jordan’s Public Security Directorate in raising awareness of human trafficking and helping to protect the most vulnerable people in the area, including Syrian refugees and host communities.

Irbid has seen one of Jordan’s biggest influxes of refugees fleeing the conflict across the border. Some 144,000 refugees are currently registered with UNHCR in the Governorate.

IOM Jordan has held educational and awareness-raising sessions for students in Irbid, where they have learned about human trafficking, how to help identify victims and how to prevent the crime.

As part of the project, IOM Jordan has also worked to build the capacity of government officials and members of the Public Security Directorate through workshops and the supply of new equipment.

Since 28th September, Jordan’s CTU has operated from newly refurbished training facilities at their headquarters in Amman, which opened officially last month as part of the capacity-building programme.

The facility was funded by the Japanese Government and the US State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM).
