450,000 and Rising: Syrians Continue to Seek Refuge in Jordan

This week, the number of refugees IOM has transported to refugee camps since July 2012 has surpassed 450,000.

With a fleet of 34 vehicles, IOM continues to respond to the flow of refugees seeking safety, with Jordan receiving a sizeable amount of those affected – the UN estimates the total figure of Syrian refugees in Jordan to be 618,086.

IOM Jordan has been responding to the crisis across several areas. In addition to transport assistance, IOM Jordan have been delivering immediate relief such as hot tea, water and essential non-food items such as shoes, as well as  general health checks and TB screening. This work has been supported by the UK DFID, the US PRM, the EU, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Governments of Japan, Canada, Germany, China, Chile, the UAE, Kuwait, Cyprus, OCHA and UNHCR.

Alongside the humanitarian work, IOM has also been working closely with the Jordanian Armed Forces and the Jordanian Border Guards to build the capacity of national authorities in coping with the continuing refugee crisis, with EU funding.

Whilst many of the refugees in Jordan stay in the camps – Za’atari, Azraq and the Emirates-Jordanian Camp – the majority of the Syrian refugees live amongst host communities. In coordination with the Ministry of Interior/Counter Trafficking Unit, OM is working in these communities to raise the awareness of the population on the consequences of human trafficking. The awareness raising activities in Mafraq and Irbid in the north of Jordan, where a high number of refugees reside, were supported by the governments of the US, Canada and Japan.

IOM Jordan remains thankful to all donors for their support, as well as international collaborative partners working with IOM in Jordan.
