Crucial Winter Supplies Delivered to Gaza through Jordan and IOM Partnership

IOM supported JHCO with 12 vehicles to strengthen its vital role in humanitarian coordination.

AMMAN, 24 December — The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO) and in coordination with the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF), delivers almost 188,000 vital winter items to Gaza.

Dozens of trucks in multiple convoys have been loaded with tents, tarps, mattresses, blankets, pillows, plastic sheets and other essential shelter items, delivered to UN partners on the ground for distribution to families in need since the beginning of November. These convoys mark a significant effort to address the mounting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where access to aid remains severely restricted.

JAF, through the Civil-Military Coordination Center’s Crisis Cell, play a pivotal role in coordinating the movement and clearance of humanitarian aid through the Jordan Corridor, working closely with JHCO, the United Nations, and other non-governmental organizations. Without this coordination, the delivery of life-saving aid to Gaza would not be possible.

Dr. Hussein Al Shebli, secretary General of JHCO said: “It is of the highest importance to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the people in Gaza, and we at JHCO are putting major efforts to make sure it is sustained. We consider our partnership with IOM and many other humanitarian organizations vital to this mutual goal and we appreciate and take pride in being a trustworthy enabler to deliver aid into Gaza.”

Frequent border closures, limited crossings and access restrictions create significant barriers that continue to hinder aid delivery to Gaza. Safe, rapid, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access is needed to reach more people in need of life-saving aid.

“This partnership with JHCO and coordination with JAF exemplifies the power and necessity of collaboration in humanitarian responses. Together, we are navigating immense challenges to deliver life-saving aid to Gaza, but more work remains. Humanitarian access is critical to ensure these efforts reach their full potential,” said IOM Jordan Chief of Mission, Tajma Kurt.

On Monday, 23 December, IOM donated 12 vehicles to JHCO to support the Crisis Cell and strengthen their capacity to facilitate aid through the Jordan Corridor. Two additional vehicles and communications equipment will be delivered in early 2025.

Since October 2023, IOM’s regional response delivered over 970,000 live-saving aid items to Gaza through the Jordan, Egypt and Cyprus corridors.
